Free Yoga Boston: On The Greenway

Happy Summer! Today is the first full day of summer and I am so here for it! Just in time for me to tell you about my second outdoor free yoga class. The class was to enjoy the light of the full moon.

It was this past Monday, the night of the full strawberry moon that Moonlight Yoga On The Greenway took place. There were maybe 50 or 60 people, so it was a nice sized crowd. But we all still had enough space to stretch out.

The class is part of an outdoor summer series collaboration between Peace in Boston, Black & Blonde (Marlene Boyette and Erin Kay Anderson), The Rose Fitzgerald Greenway, Athleta, with Meghan “Meg” Gaucher.

If you didn’t make it to this class, you have at least a couple of more chances this summer, July 16th and September 14th.

It was more than convenient for me to attend, so I had absolutely no excuse not to go. And it’s easy to talk myself out of going places. It was right after work and outside of South Station, where I would be going anyway to get the train home. Outside of the horror show that is the Red Line, which is another story, I had a very zen evening.

The class was more slow and sitting stretches than standing poses, but that was perfect after a day of work and calmed me down for my commute. I definitely recommend this class if you get a chance to go.

The only downside was that the sky was cloudy, so we couldn’t actually see the full moon, though I think most of us were looking for it. Hopefully the next class will be on a clear night, so you can look up and see that big beautiful bright full moon!

Startup Institute Hosts Career Confessional in Boston

Career confessional booth

One day last week, I exited South Station and started walking across Dewey Square to go to my office. Someone came up to me and asked if I was interested in trying out Startup Institute‘s Career Confessional.

The person speaking to me said that since it was such a nice day, they decided to take their office outside, so they could talk to people and see what they were looking for in their careers. I was curious and figured it seemed like a fun blog post at the very least. So I went in.

Allan Telio at Career Confessional

I met VP and Boston Program Director Allan Telio. He said that what they do is help people find work in the local tech sector. I told him that I was on my way to my attorney day job, but that I’m also a freelance writer and blogger.

Telio said that he speaks with many attorneys who want to leave the legal field and try something new. We’ve probably all seen people who describe themselves as “recovering lawyers” who are now doing something different.

Although I don’t particularly like the term, because lawyering isn’t a sickness. I believe that lawyers have a pretty interesting set of skills that can be used in many ways.

It seems that Telio recognizes that and said that lawyers are natural content creators and often turn to writing. Preaching to the choir! It seems to me that a career is something that spans a lifetime. A career grows and changes as we do. It’s not just one job. It’s more vast than that.

Since I started blogging, I’ve been constantly in pursuit of ways to combine my naturally curious nature and love of research and writing. In different parts of my work life over the years, I’ve found ways to do it. But I’m looking for the next level. Which I am learning is a lifelong lesson and process.

Now That It’s Spring

labyrinths

Warmer weather is here and after a full week of clouds, cold and rain, I am ready to enjoy the sunny warm outdoors. Yay spring!

Did you know that this past Saturday, May 7th was World Labyrinth Day? People all over the globe “Walked as One at 1” in order to generate a wave of peaceful energy.

I didn’t get to do any labyrinth walking, but it got me thinking that spring is the perfect time to renew my Life List efforts, see #82, and walk some new labyrinths.

In case you’re interested as well, The Labyrinth Society‘s labyrinth locator helps you find a labyrinth in your area. It’s fun, relaxing and a walking meditation.

spring brings farmers market produce
Also, I am so excited that with the arrival of spring, the open markets are all finally coming back! SoWa Open Market opened May 1st.

SoWa Open Market in spring

Take a look on the Massachusetts Farmers Market website for a listing of markets and when they are open for the season.

Copley Square Farmers Market opens tomorrow and Dewey Square Farmers Market opens next week on Thursday, May 19th. Dewey Square is easiest for me to get to, since it’s right outside South Station. I cannot wait for such easy access to just picked fruits and vegetables again!

Subway Stories: The Red Line on the MBTA Today

As I tweeted earlier, it’s never good when you see your commute destination trending on Twitter. I wish there were a good parking alternative, because I would just drive in instead of taking the Red Line.

It’s not snowing out. It’s not that cold. The T should be functioning. But it’s not.

Red Line alert

I’m hoping that time has eased the problem and that when I get to the train, everything will be cleared up. Let’s hope.

Subway Stories: Girl Scout Cookies

Girl Scout Cookies 1Girl Scout Cookies 2As I left work last night, I was considering baking this weekend. When I walk, I find my mind creating recipes and the idea of rosemary shortbread was swirling in my head. Then I arrived at South Station to catch the train and saw a table with Girl Scout Cookies.

Talk about a mind shift! I literally stopped in my tracks and frantically started rummaging through my pocketbook to see how much cash I had. I hadn’t made it to the bank, so there wasn’t much. Was I only going to be able to get one box of Girl Scout Cookies?!

Luckily, the Girl Scouts have evolved with the times and they take bank cards now. I got three boxes of cookies: Lemonades, Shortbread and Thin Mints. G and I devoured the Lemonades yesterday. They are so perfect!

Today, I need to lay off the cookies and burn some of those calories off. But I’m looking forward to eating the rest. Maybe I’ll pick up some more as this cookie season continues. The Girl Scouts hit the jackpot of locations being inside the T and certainly helped make my commute much sweeter!

Happy Weekend to you!
