Tax Day: Tax Tips for Bloggers

It’s Tax Day! At least for those of you not in Maine or Massachusetts. We have until April 19th to file our returns, because of Patriots’ Day today.

Back in 2012 and 2014, I wrote some posts with tax tips for bloggers. Since the subject of blogging income interests me and many readers as well, I thought I’d revisit the topic. There’s always a new crop of bloggers out there!

Generally, if you earn money blogging, that is considered income. You may have accidentally become an entrepreneur by turning your passion project into a job. Or maybe from the beginning, you wanted to earn money by blogging.

The way you think about your blogging work is key, especially when it comes to the IRS. Once you have the intent to make a profit and you treat your blogging like a business, then you may be considered self-employed.

While you may not be earning full-time money that you can live on, it doesn’t matter. You may be considered self-employed even with a part-time business. The threshold for earnings is surprisingly low according to the IRS.

You have to file an income tax return if your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more. If your net earnings from self-employment were less than $400, you still have to file an income tax return if you meet any other filing requirement …

There are benefits to treating your blogging as work that you are doing for profit versus a hobby. Below is an IRS rule to remember.

In general, taxpayers may deduct ordinary and necessary expenses for conducting a trade or business or for the production of income. Trade or business activities and activities engaged in for the production of income are activities engaged in for profit.

If you are paying to eat at a restaurant, so you blog about your meal and you are earning advertising revenue on your blog, you might be able to deduct the cost of your meal as an ordinary and necessary expense for conducting the business of your blog.

Spring 2016: Free Yoga Classes in Boston

duo yoga pose While it may not be officially spring yet, it’s so close and I feel like we made it through the winter. Plus, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, so let’s just go with it.

The Winter Schedule of free yoga classes needed updating, so might as well start my spring cleaning here.

Remember there are Meetups in the area to try out.

Hands To Heart Center Yoga – Yoga for the People provides free yoga classes for people living with poverty and trauma in Boston. Check out their website and Twitter for class schedules.

The Free Yoga Boston Community Page on Facebook is updated everyday. So be sure to check there for all sorts of yoga news!

Troops for Fitness Yoga
BCYF Cleveland Community Center (Dorchester)
7:15pm – 8:15pm

As part of the Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness program, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department is offering free yoga classes on different days and locations and seems to be a year-round thing. Most classes last an hour and schedules change every couple of months. For updates and cancellations, check Twitter and Facebook.

TUESDAY

Yoga Classes at Boston Medical Center
Moakley Building (830 Harrison Avenue, Boston)
6pm – 7:15pm

These yoga classes are not just during the summer and are open to community members in addition to BMC patients and staff. They are held indoors and part of the Program for Integrative Medicine & Health Care Disparities. Take the elevator or stairs down to the basement. The classes are free, but there is a suggested donation of $5.00. Currently there is a flyer online [click here], but it is old. If the online flyer is updated, I will link to it here.

Complete Candlelight Flow
Pop Allston (89 Brighton Ave, Boston)
8pm – 9pm

Yoga Hub, founded by Ali Singer, is offering this class designed for yogis to advance their practice through building a comprehensive understanding of yoga techniques and philosophy. Upon arrival, each student receives a candle as a symbolic token of union with the Self and with others. No experience is necessary. Free mat rental is available. While the class is free, there is a suggested $5 donation.

WEDNESDAY

More To Love Yoga
Yoga Series at the Ed Portal (Harvard Ed Portal, Allston)
7:30pm – 8:30pm

Rachel Estapa, founder of More to Love, is a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher and professional body image coach. The class offers practical pose variations and enhances body acceptance. Harvard Ed Portal’s Yoga Series offers different types of free yoga classes through the year. Eventbrite registration is encouraged due to space constraints.

Glow Yoga
Pop Allston (89 Brighton Ave, Boston)
8pm – 9pm

Yoga Hub, founded by Ali Singer, is an all-levels class incorporating black lights, glow sticks, dance music, and asana. You get fitness, fun and will get creative with neon body paint. Free mat rental is available. While the class is free, there is a suggested $5 donation.

FRIDAY

Beyond Beginner Yoga
Yoga Series at the Ed Portal (Harvard Ed Portal, Allston)
6pm – 7pm

If you’re comfortable with basic yoga poses and are looking for more sophisticated sequences and poses, this class draws on different styles of flow yoga and integrates some meditation to relax the mind as well as the body. Harvard Ed Portal’s Yoga Series offers different types of free yoga classes through the year. Eventbrite registration is encouraged due to space constraints.

SATURDAY

Winter Workout
The Liberty Hotel (Charles Street, Beacon Hill, Boston)
10am

Back in 2009, The Liberty was one of the first hotels in Boston, or anyplace in the area for that matter, to start offering free yoga classes in the summer. They set the trend and still offer free classes in collaboration with Equinox. Guests of the hotel and members of the community are welcome to take the class for free. Classes are year round. In the summer, classes are outside in the courtyard. In the cooler months, they are indoors. Check with the concierge to find the exact class location, since it appears to change.

SUNDAY

Reggae Flow
Pop Allston (89 Brighton Ave, Boston)
9:30am – 10:30am

Yoga Hub, founded by Ali Singer, is offering this reggae-inspired yoga class. No experience is necessary for this class, where postures build through a progressive sequence, designed to cultivate total harmony in body and mind. Free mat rental is available. While the class is free, there is a suggested $5 donation.

Brewery Yoga
Night Shift Brewing (87 Santilli Highway, Everett)
11am – 12pm

These yoga classes take place at the brewery every so often. Take a look at their event calendar for confirmation and sign up! Kat O’Leary from CorePower Yoga teaches the vinyasa classes.

Yoga For Runners
Boston Marathon adidas Runbase (855 Boylston Street, Boston)
6:30pm

These free vinyasa yoga classes are taught by Liz Vail. A customized yoga flow will bring balance to overworked muscles used when running and will also provide strength to the areas of the body that are needed in order to run more efficiently. All levels of yoga experience are welcome, but it looks like you need to register each week.

Autumn/Winter 2015: Free Yoga Classes in Boston

duo yoga poseSummer is indeed over. But not the free yoga classes! There are many free yoga classes to choose from now that we are into fall and headed toward winter. This is the first year that I have noticed so many. Enough for me to compile a new list. I’ll be trying some of these classes too! There are Meetups in the area to check out.

Plus, free pop-up classes seem to be the rage! As this trend continues, I’ll add those classes as I find them to the Facebook page. New posts and listings go up there several times a day, so make sure you keep up!

As part of the Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness program, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department is offering free yoga classes with U.S. Army Veteran Roxanne Hope Randall. Classes started at the beginning of October and go through November 30th.

TUESDAY

BPL Yoga: Intelligence for Body, Mind, & Soul
Boston Public Library (Central Library, Copley Square)
12pm – 1pm

Acclaimed yoga teacher, author, and entrepreneur Rebecca Pacheco will lead these yoga classes for an all-levels class to unplug and recharge body, mind, and spirit. You will be surrounded by books, history, and the library’s peaceful hush in the historic Abbey Room of the McKim Building. Classes start on January 12 and are held weekly until February 16. What a great way to start the new year!

Nike+ Training Club offers this athletic vinyasa-style class taught by yoga and Pilates instructor Jacqui Mimno to target often overlooked elements of training. You’ll improve joint mobility, while simultaneously working on upper body and core strength. You need to register each week for the class on their online calendar, which updates on Sunday at 3pm. These classes are held indoors year round, so you can enjoy them even when summer ends!

free yoga classes BostonI hope you’ve been enjoying all the free yoga classes this summer. I certainly have, but did not go to all that I hoped. Luckily there is still some time!

One thing that’s nice about these classes is that not all of them end with the summer. Some are indoors and will continue.

If things continue with the trends that I’m seeing, I would not be surprised to see a lot more free yoga classes popping up even through the colder months, but with different themes.

On the Free Yoga Boston Facebook page, I update it several times a day with with news about yoga, wellness and good living. Please “Like” it and make sure you keep up with the news! I’ll let you know about free yoga classes that may pop up here and there.

Hallie Dumont of OMBE, has been teaching free yoga classes as part of the P.O. Fitness series this summer. She says that recently she was brainstorming about free yoga classes with the community leader at Lululemon and they came up with Vinyasa & Vino! The first people to be let in will be those with Eventbrite tickets. Others are welcome to show up and will be allowed in based on space available. They will try and accommodate everyone. If you can’t make it tomorrow, it’s possible there could be similar ones in the future. Especially since I’ve been noticing a boozy yoga trend.

A donation based yoga class will be given by Ali Singer, who taught several free classes this summer, and The Yoga Hub, along with Amanda Light and Georgina Castellucci. This class will be for all skill levels. All donations will be for the Boston Bloggers Jimmy Fund Walk team, raising funds for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Everyone who makes a donation (via the Eventbrite or in person) will receive an entry for an (out)door prize of over $125 worth of yoga goods from YogaOutlet.com.

OMBE is putting on this free outdoor class that is open to all regardless of age or practice level. Students will be led through a series of dynamic postures designed to open the body and calm the mind. The class is sponsored by OMBE partners: Lululemon, Supplet, Hint Water and Boloco. Check the Facebook page for updates in the event of bad weather.

Summer 2015: Free Yoga Classes in Providence, Rhode Island

*Updated 6/8/2016* Since there was very little response to this post and the FB Community, I don’t plan to do an update this year. If that changes, I will let you know!

duo yoga pose Since I started listing a schedule of free yoga classes in Boston and the surrounding areas, I’ve started noticing that there are many free yoga classes being offered all over the country. Rhode Island is a close New England neighbor to the south.

Growing up in southeastern Massachusetts, I watched Rhode Island television stations as well as Boston ones. The same went for radio stations. Last year I visited a wonderful Providence restaurant. I had the best time at WaterFire and recommend it to everyone. There’s a lot to love in the Providence area.

Naturally, I became curious about free yoga classes in the Rhode Island area. From my initial research, there are several being offered. Unfortunately, this listing is starting well into the summer, but there are a few weeks left to enjoy what’s left of the season.

Also, a one-off free class is coming up for Labor Day, Monday, September 7th from 9am – 10:30am at Goddard Park on Ives Road in Warwick. The class is being offered by Laughing Elephant Yoga. This yoga studio is also offering some other free community classes that are listed below.

It’s best to bring your own yoga mat to these classes, since they may not be provided.

Please click on the links provided in each listing to check on the classes and/or check the Facebook pages for further updates. Sometimes outdoor classes are cancelled due to the weather.

Many of these classes are part of a park series that is starting to wind down for the season and I’m not quite positive about the last day of classes, but it looks like they end by August 20th. So check before you go!

In addition to the Free Yoga Boston Facebook Community, I have formed a Free Yoga Providence Facebook Community where I will be posting as well. I will be providing more immediate updates there.

Like the listing for Boston, this Providence list will be a work in progress and an experiment. If it’s well received and helpful to people, then maybe I’ll do it again next year. We’ll see. Namaste!
