National Chocolate Day: For the Love of a Chocolate Macaron

chocolate macaronWithout Twitter trending topics, I wouldn’t have known that today is National Chocolate Day. I haven’t celebrated properly yet, but decided that this holiday is worthy of a post.

Martha Stewart says to “gather the good things” and I would put a chocolate macaron in that list of good things to be gathered. Wouldn’t you?

Dark chocolate is my favorite kind of chocolate. It’s the healthy kind too. It’s even said to improve memory, according to this NOVA Next article.

Now, there’s new evidence to suggest that chocolate dramatically improves the memory skills that people lose with age. When healthy people between the ages of 50 and 69 drank a mixture high in cocoa flavanols for three months, they performed about 25% better on a memory test compared to a control group of participants.

Although it would take seven bars of chocolate a day to improve it by 25%. Only two bars left to eat today!! Just kidding. 😀

Also, I just happened to read an interesting dessert related article in The Atlantic about macarons. Apparently macarons are the new cupcake. But I’ve been writing about macarons for years. I love them so much! Not to be confused with macaroons, which I have no problem resisting.

So I found a beautiful picture combining the beauty and goodness of chocolate and macarons. What could be better than that?

The Fair Food Label Identifies Ethically Grown Tomatoes

CIW Fair Food Label

Over the past couple of years, I’ve written about the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and their work to improve the lives of those who harvest tomatoes. If we haven’t grown the tomatoes ourselves, it’s likely that many of the tomatoes we eat come from Immokalee, Florida, where the workers have organized for more humane working conditions.

If you follow me on Twitter, you may also have seen some of my recent tweets about the CIW. Just last month, they received the Clinton Global Citizen Award. The award was established in 2007 for those who take President Bill Clinton’s call to action. It honors “outstanding individuals who exemplify global citizenship through their vision and leadership.”

The new Fair Food label pictured above was created by the CIW, so that we consumers can look for it in the grocery store and when we eat out at restaurants.  Below is an excerpt from the press release.

The label will be available to all grocery stores and restaurants that participate in the Fair Food Program. Participants in the Program pay a small premium when they buy Florida tomatoes, with the premium going to increase wages for farmworkers. They also commit to a worker-created Code of Conduct to ensure safe working conditions and prevent forced labor, sexual harassment and child labor in the fields. The Fair Food Program has been called “the best workplace monitoring program in the US,” in the New York Times and “one of the great human rights success stories of our day,” in the Washington Post.

“We have waited nearly five years before revealing this label to the world today,” said Cruz Salucio of the CIW.  “Over those years, we have been doing the hard, day-by-day work of building the Fair Food Program in Florida’s fields — educating workers about their rights, investigating complaints, and identifying and eliminating bad actors and bad practices — so that today we can stand behind the fair conditions and effective monitoring process that this label represents,” continued Salucio.  “We couldn’t be more proud of this label. It symbolizes the new day for workers in agriculture that we, as farmworkers and in partnership with consumers across the country, have fought so hard to make real.”

Whole Foods and Compass Brands, a major presence on university campuses, will be the first members of the Fair Food Program to display the label in their stores and dining facilities.

In addition to looking for the label, also be on the lookout for Food Chains, a documentary film that chronicles the CIW’s Campaign for Fair Food. Executive Produced by Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives), Eric Schlosser (Food Inc, Fast Food Nation) and narrated by Forest Whitaker, the film will be in theaters in just a few weeks on November 21, 2014. Here’s the film trailer below.

Snacking On A Pumpkin Cookie

pumpkin cookie for snacking

As I mentioned in my Edgar Allen Poe post, I had a meeting downtown yesterday. We met at Starbucks, but then decided to sit outside, since it was nice out.

My free birthday drink was getting ready to expire, so I let Starbucks treat me to an iced Oprah Chai Tea Latte. My first time trying it. It was good! Have you tried it?

Since I can’t resist anything striking any sort of resemblance to a pumpkin or hinting at pumpkin spice, I broke down and got a pumpkin sugar cookie since it was perfect for snacking. It wasn’t pumpkin spice, but I still enjoyed it.

I could probably bake something just as good, if not better myself for snacking. Maybe I need to get a pumpkin cookie cutter?

National Popcorn Poppin’ Month

Boomchickapop popcorn truck in Quincy

Earlier this evening, I went to Stop & Shop to quickly pick-up a few groceries. As I was parking my car (add the Boston accent if you like), I spotted this pink and purple truck and took a picture. I walked into the store and they were handing out free bags of popcorn, so of course I took a couple.

According to The Popcorn Board, October is National Popcorn Poppin’ Month. Until a few minutes ago, I didn’t know there was a Popcorn Board never mind that that this is the official month of popcorn poppin’.

The Boom Tour is in the Boston area right now and I just happened to walk smack into it. A Huffington Post article says that Angie Bastian started her business, BOOMCHICKAPOP, because she was trying to make some extra money to put toward her children’s college funds. She and her husband Dan turned it into a $50 million dollar business and their products are sold in all fifty states and Canada.

Looks like the kids won’t be needing student loans!

Favorite Recipes in New England

new england mapRecently I saw an article in Parade where the favorite recipes of each state were revealed. At least according to Pinterest. I was particularly interested in the New England region and thought that you might be too.

I created a Pinterest Board to get the visual and was rather surprised by the results. Not what I would have imagined. I would have expected some seafood in at least one of the states.  You just never know.

Are you surprised too?
