Free Yoga Boston ~ Virtual Yoga Classes

*UPDATED: June 17, 2020*

Some of these classes may have ended or changed. As more places open up, some live classes, especially outdoor classes may take place. My focus won’t be updating this list. Instead. I’m researching a new summer list of free outdoor classes in the Boston area. virtual yoga class listing

When I first started blogging about free yoga classes in Boston back in 2009, I could never have imagined that 11 years later, I’d be writing about free virtual yoga classes because we would be in the middle of a worldwide pandemic that would prohibit us from going outdoors.

Whew. Take a breath. We probably all need to take a breath.

But here we are. It’s 2020 and the spread of coronavirus has taken over every single aspect of all of our lives. Collectively, the world has been required to take a pause. We’ve had to stop life as normal and learn to exist in a whole different way.

Social distancing and self-quarantine is now a thing. Working from home is way more accepted now. Gatherings have been put on hold. Like my dinner club, that had just started up again! Schools are all closed. Businesses are closed. Sports have stopped. The Boston Marathon was postponed. The Olympics were postponed. No more dining in restaurants. Only take-out and delivery.

Life has been transformed. Everyday I still wonder how this is all real. But we humans are resilient.  The “Rona” is here for now and we have no choice but to accept it and get on with living our lives.

Free Yoga Boston – A Collaboration

Soooo, on the Free Yoga Boston Facebook page, there was a comment from Sophie Besl asking if there was an online specific list on my blog. I didn’t have one.

I’ve been sharing free online classes since COVID-19 took hold — because most yoga classes were forced out of the studios and have gone virtual. It was a good question and I thought it was an excellent idea too. But to be honest, I needed help. I’ve found that people are often willing if I ask.

I asked Sophie if she’d do the research and she did. She created a Google spreadsheet and made it so that if anyone would like to add additional virtual yoga classes to the list, they can submit them here. Thank you Sophie!

Even thought most classes are free, if you have the means to offer a donation, I’m sure it would be greatly appreciated.

Most of these classes are for a limited period of time. Since things change swiftly in this new reality, the classes are not listed by day of the week like the other FYB list.

Please click on the links and find the dates and times that work for you. Hopefully this list will be helpful. Stay healthy!

Yoga classes are still indoors, but spring is just around the corner. This list of free yoga classes in the Greater Boston area and beyond has been updated several times over the last few months and changes to the list continue.  Please let me know if you have any corrections and/or tips!

The current list has classes that are year round and for the winterClick links for details about current dates, etc. Even though classes are free, most require registration due to size constraints. Marathon Sports classes are usually offered on Sundays, but vary greatly by date and location.

Many branches of the Boston Public Library have free yoga classes on different days and most are listed below. Also look at the BPL website for details and changes that I may have not seen.

Make sure to check the Free Yoga Boston Group too. It’s a private group, but you can request to join. Members share information and there are additional classes and events listed there as well.

Many of the free classes that I find are on Eventbrite and Eventful, so check there too! There are classes on Meetup that I generally do not include in my listings.

Enjoy!

Free Yoga Boston: On The Greenway

Happy Summer! Today is the first full day of summer and I am so here for it! Just in time for me to tell you about my second outdoor free yoga class. The class was to enjoy the light of the full moon.

It was this past Monday, the night of the full strawberry moon that Moonlight Yoga On The Greenway took place. There were maybe 50 or 60 people, so it was a nice sized crowd. But we all still had enough space to stretch out.

The class is part of an outdoor summer series collaboration between Peace in Boston, Black & Blonde (Marlene Boyette and Erin Kay Anderson), The Rose Fitzgerald Greenway, Athleta, with Meghan “Meg” Gaucher.

If you didn’t make it to this class, you have at least a couple of more chances this summer, July 16th and September 14th.

It was more than convenient for me to attend, so I had absolutely no excuse not to go. And it’s easy to talk myself out of going places. It was right after work and outside of South Station, where I would be going anyway to get the train home. Outside of the horror show that is the Red Line, which is another story, I had a very zen evening.

The class was more slow and sitting stretches than standing poses, but that was perfect after a day of work and calmed me down for my commute. I definitely recommend this class if you get a chance to go.

The only downside was that the sky was cloudy, so we couldn’t actually see the full moon, though I think most of us were looking for it. Hopefully the next class will be on a clear night, so you can look up and see that big beautiful bright full moon!

Free Yoga Boston: The Street Chestnut Hill

Free yoga class at The Street Chestnut Hill.

This morning I went to my first free outdoor yoga class of the season. Yay!

It was a 9:30am class at The Street Chestnut Hill with lululemon. The classes are almost every Sunday through the end of September.

There is an Eventbrite page to sign up in advance, but I arrived a bit late and just joined in with the class. There was a lot of room to spread out my mat and move around. I’m not sure that any tickets were checked at the beginning of the class.

Since the mall wasn’t opened yet, there was plenty of parking right near where the class was being held. The weather was perfect and I enjoyed the class.

It was a quick drive to Chestnut Hill from Quincy, taking Route 128 to Route 9, because it was a Sunday morning. There was a bit of traffic on my way home, but not too much. I’ll definitely go to this class again. It’s a great way to start off Sunday and I like trying out different classes.

The Street and YogaWorks will host what looks to be once a month free yoga classes in the evenings, called Yoga Under The Stars. The next one is Wednesday, July 17th, so you should probably sign up soon if you want to go!
