11 Years Blogging: Mend

11 years blogging

It’s my 11th year blogging today! Yay! And I’m keeping up with my annual tradition of choosing a new word for the year.

After writing the post about finishing my quilt, I found it — MEND.

I mended my heart. I mended my quilt. And as my mother pointed out to me when I mentioned my choice of a word, “Our country needs mending.” The United States is not quite in tatters, but it’s not united either. We are a nation divided in need of healing.

Merriam-Webster defines mend in several different ways. Here are a few.

To free from faults or defects
To improve in manners or morals
To set right or correct
To put into good shape or working order again
To patch up or repair
To improve or strengthen (as a relationship) by negotiation or conciliation
To restore to health or cure

The picture above doesn’t have much to do with my word, except for it reminds me of the phrase that “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”

I took a bunch of photos at Eataly and bought this Mieli Thun honey. It was really good! And who knew about nomadic beekeeping? The baguettes are just pretty to pair with the honey. And the sweetness of honey goes well with bread.

For this country to mend, I think we need a whole lot of loving-kindness and learning to be sweet to one another. Even when we’re strangers. Maybe especially so.

Since I first drafted this post, I realized that today is Trump’s 100th day in office. I was hoping that he’d be gone by now, but at least we have survived!

Election Day Eve 2016

Collage showing pictures of election day cakes and cupcakes.

Over the years, I’ve written about many elections. I was very excited about the election while I was supporting Bernie Sanders in the primary. After that, not so much.

Trump is an abomination and I will leave it at that. Since Massachusetts has early voting, I voted already for Hillary Clinton. I wasn’t particularly happy about voting for her, but she is the only sane choice. And again, I will leave it at that.

The campaigns have stressed me out and I’m horribly nervous about tomorrow. I have never felt worse about an election. Which is probably why this is my only real election post. And it’s still kind of not a real election post. But it’s all that I have in me to write.

The best thing that I can say about this election is the resurgence of election cakes. I baked one back in 2007 and blogged an election cake recipe on BoomerGirl.com. That blog exists in a different form now and my post is long gone. So much has changed since 2007!

Luckily, the Wayback Machine exists and I was able to find the archived version. The pictures of the cake aren’t there, but you can still read the post. I’m so glad to find my recipe, because I thought it was lost forever.

Maybe I’ll try adapting it again. Because as I recall, there was room for improvement. Assuming we survive the aftermath of this election. God help us all.

A Boston Night: Dorothy Parker, Mood + Memory

Black and white photo of antique cars on a Boston street at night.

It always surprises me when I hear about people not knowing what they like. The older I get, the more I see that this life journey is about self-discovery.

If you’re looking to become better acquainted with yourself, blogging is one way. Looking back on over ten years of writing and taking pictures, I’ve noticed themes.

I see what topics interest me based on what I’ve blogged about. Food is a huge one. Yogafull moons, birthdays, Boston and astrology are some more.

From using Instagram, the themes are even more pronounced because it’s mostly only pictures. I’ve noticed that I’m interested in all phases of the moonflowers, trees, the sky and clouds. Based on these themes, I’m surprised I haven’t gone full Wiccca!

Anyway, one thing I have always been fascinated by since childhood is nightfall. That transition from day to night. When the sun is setting and the moon is rising. It’s so beautiful and feels magical to me. Maybe because I was born at night? I don’t know.

This morning, as I was catching up on some of my favorite blogs, I found this picture on Instagram by Yolanda Edwards. Based on the comments, it appears to be a Citroen parked by a storefront — a quiet evening in Paris and could not be more lovely.

Her picture immediately reminded me of the picture above. Probably one of my favorite pictures. I took it in Boston back in 2007 and wrote a post about it. Below is a quote from the post.

When I thought of Dorothy Parker’s poetry and life, it reminded me of those films, so I thought that I would adapt the film noir genre to a new genre of blog post. The post noir. Noir is black in French and I couldn’t help but think of my prior post about the color black. It all seemed to fit.

I took some night pictures around the city and converted them to black and white to try and get that same noir feeling. I was hoping for something special. Out of the blue, these two old cars appeared the two nights in a row that I was taking pictures, so I was able to take a bunch of shots of them. It was almost surreal. Like the cars just appeared from a different time. I’m sure there is a very rational explanation to it, but I like the mystery.

As I was looking at these old posts, I wondered if I could post this in time for Dorothy Parker‘s birthday.  Her birthday is August 22nd, and she would be 123, so the timing is just right.

Also, stay tuned for an Instagram photography project that I will be announcing soon. If you look at themes in this post, there are some bread crumbs. Any guesses?

Until then, an early Happy Birthday Dorothy Parker!
